Dr. Fred Wright, the Associate Chief of Staff for Research for VA Connecticut, retired in February 2022 following an illustrious career as both a scientist and leader in VA research. Dr. Wright began his career at VA Connecticut in 1977, first as a staff physician, and then as the Associate Chief of Staff for Research from 1983-2022.  Dr. Wright was an exemplary public servant and a tireless advocate of VA research. He mentored and supported generations of researchers and emerged as a national resource for VA research, serving on many VA Office of Research & Development committees and initiatives.  One of his substantial contributions to VISN 1 was his role in founding and ensuring the success of the VISN 1 Career Development Award (CDA) program.

Dr. Wright was a great role model for the VA research community. With full devotion to the mission of the VA, he brought together a rare combination of brilliance, positive attitude, kindness, and a great sense of humor. He always offered potential solutions with an unflappable approach, even under the most challenging circumstances. We owe him greatly for his dedication and tireless service to VA Research and are proud to name the VISN 1 Career Development Award in his honor.
