VA New England Healthcare System Announces New Medical Center Director

Montoya Brings Leadership, Proven Experience to Manchester VAMC
BEDFORD, Mass. — The Department of Veterans Affairs is pleased to announce the appointment of Alfred A. Montoya Jr. as the new director of Manchester VA Medical Center. Montoya will oversee a comprehensive healthcare system classified as a Complexity Level 3 facility that provides care to approximately 33,000 enrolled Veterans from Eastern New Hampshire, with an operating budget of $141+ million.
“We are pleased to appoint Mr. Montoya as the new director of Manchester VA Medical Center,” said Dr. Michael Mayo-Smith, Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) 1 director. “His sound leadership qualities and proven experience will be valuable assets for the facility, the employees and volunteers, and for the Veterans we are honored to serve. He is currently serving as the acting director, so we anticipate a smooth transition to this role.”
Montoya has held positions of increasing complexity within VA over the past decade. He served as the education coordinator and executive assistant to the director of VA Connecticut Healthcare System before being promoted to assistant director in 2012. Montoya was selected as the medical center director at White River Junction VA Medical Center in June of 2016 until he was tapped to become the acting director of Manchester VAMC in July 2017.
Montoya is a United States Air Force Veteran where he served as a Russian Cryptologic Linguist for over 10 years. In addition, he served as an Instructor of Technology and Military Science, providing our Air Force personnel operational training on the EC-130H Compass Call which is a system on a C-130 Hercules airframe that disrupts enemy command and control communications.
Montoya received a Master’s of Science in Healthcare Administration from Walden University in Minneapolis, Minn, and a Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Education from Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, Texas.
Manchester VA Medical Center is part of the VA New England Healthcare System which includes eight medical centers, located in the six New England States: Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. It is an integral part of VISN 1, headquartered in Bedford, Mass. Manchester VA Medical Center is comprised of one main campus located in Manchester, N.H. and four Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) located in Conway, Portsmouth, Somersworth, and Tilton. The Portsmouth outpatient clinic is located at Pease Air National Guard Base.
